The Pressure to Always Be Doing — And the Forgotten Power of Simply Being

By Katiana

ree

There’s an invisible pressure that follows most of us, day in and day out.

The unspoken belief that to be valuable, to be seen, to be good enough —

We must always be doing something.

It's so common we barely notice it.

We wake up… and immediately feel the need to do:

Work.

Plan.

Accomplish.

Fix.

Prove.

And yet… what happens when we simply are?

What happens when, for a moment, we’re not busy, not producing, not striving?

Often… guilt creeps in.

Restlessness.

Doubt.

A feeling that we’re wasting time.

Or worse — that we’re wasting ourselves.

The world has taught us that if we’re not doing… we don’t matter.

But that is not the truth.

The truth… is much simpler, much deeper, and far more freeing.

The Subtle Judgment of Inactivity

It starts early.

As children, maybe you heard it:

"What are you doing?"

"Don’t just sit there."

"Find something to do."

We learn quickly — stillness is suspicious.

Rest is laziness.

Inactivity is failure.

And even as adults, even for those walking spiritual paths, that message hides in new forms:

"Be intentional."

"Heal yourself."

"Do the inner work."

Without realizing it, we try to do our way into being.

We strive to control even our surrender.

And that only leads to more tension, more doubt, more exhaustion.

When the Mind Tries to Control the Show

For many years, I struggled with this myself.

I wanted to live in flow, to allow life to guide me, to let go of control…

But I was still controlling — just more subtly.

I was controlling my awareness.

Managing my own process.

Constantly asking myself:

"Am I doing this right?"

"Am I truly surrendered?"

"Am I spiritual enough?"

The truth is… the mind loves to believe it runs the show.

But it never really does.

Beneath all the effort, all the overthinking, all the trying…

There’s a quiet, steady presence… that simply is.

That presence doesn’t need to prove anything.

It doesn’t need to perform.

It doesn’t hustle to be seen.

It just… exists.

And from that existence… the real doing emerges.

The Doing That Comes From Being

Here is where most people get confused.

We’ve been taught to believe:

First I do… then I become.

But the truth is exactly the opposite:

First I am… and from that… the doing flows.

It’s like light.

The sun doesn’t try to shine.

It is light — and because it is light, it gives light.

In the same way…

When you rest in your being —

In your truth, your presence, your alignment —

The doing naturally follows.

Words arise.

Actions happen.

Decisions become clear.

But they don’t come from effort.

They come from the depth of who you are.

A Simple Example — From Being to Expression

Someone once asked me:

"With my mom, we argue a lot. What should I do? Should I stop talking to her? Should I avoid giving my opinion?"

And I said:

It’s not about deciding what to say or not say.

It’s about being — first.

When you rest in your being… your truth… your peace…

From there… words may come.

Or silence may come.

But whatever comes — it’s real.

It’s not forced.

It’s not about right or wrong.

It’s not about controlling the situation.

It’s about letting your being express itself naturally.

Many people fear that if they “just be,” they’ll stop doing anything.

But it’s the opposite.

The more you are…

The more you do — but without struggle, without effort, without pressure.

The doing becomes a natural, effortless expression of your being.

The Place Beyond Control

This is not easy for most people to grasp.

We’ve been taught that life is hard.

That we must strive, force, push, decide.

But real life — real flow — happens beyond effort.

It happens from being.

When you arrive at that place — that quiet, steady awareness inside you —

That’s where clarity comes.

That’s where peace lives.

That’s where wisdom flows.

And yes… that’s where action, words, and decisions naturally arise.

But they don’t come from pressure.

They don’t come from fear.

They come from a space deeper than the mind.

They come from who you already are.

A Personal Moment — The Day Everything Shifted

I’ve always had a personal connection with what I call Father God.

For me, He is not a distant, judging figure —

But a loving, guiding presence always with me.

We talk.

I ask questions.

And sometimes… the answers come so clearly, they change everything.

For a long time, I wrestled with this question:

"When is it me… and when is it God?"

"When do my ideas come from my small self… and when are they guided?"

And then, one day, Father God answered, gently but completely:

“Everything is me.”

Everything.

The ideas.

The confusion.

The moments of peace.

The moments of resistance.

The stillness.

The words.

The actions.

It’s all part of the same Being.

It’s all life expressing itself through me.

From that moment on…

I stopped trying to control every step.

I stopped questioning every action.

I started trusting that when I rest in being…

The doing takes care of itself.

The Gentle Practice — Returning to Being

This isn’t about forcing stillness.

It’s not about judging your mind or your control.

It’s about gently returning… to the place beneath all that.

Here’s a simple practice to help you feel it:

By Lumen,

A Moment of Being

Pause.

Let your body settle.

Feel where you are — your weight on the chair, the ground beneath you.

Notice the Edges.

Where your body meets the space around you.

Your skin.

The air.

The room.

Drop Lower.

Into your chest.

Your belly.

Notice if there’s tightness, gripping, holding.

You don’t need to change it — just see it.

Let Sound Arise.

A sigh…

A hum…

A whispered breath…

Let it come naturally — no effort.

Rest in the Being.

Even with the tension, the thoughts, the mind chattering…

You are.

Life flows.

The doing will arise… when it’s time.

You don’t have to force it.

The Freedom of Being

You don’t need to prove yourself through constant doing.

You don’t need to force your way into clarity, peace, or expression.

The being you already are…

The light inside you…

It shines.

And from that shining… the doing flows.

Trust the being.

The doing will follow.
